Garnier Micellar Water is a simple and affordable skincare staple to a lot of people. I’ve recently had an odd experience with it though.
Okay, I’m going to get straight to the point…
Garnier Micellar Water smells mouldy when I put it on my face
The other week, I opened a brand new bottle of Garnier Micellar Water and used it on a fresh cotton wool pad to clean my face with. So far, so good. And then after about a minute on my face, I started to smell this awful, overwhelmingly mouldy and earthy smell.
It smelt so strong that I had to wash it straight off. I tried other cotton wool pads, and it still happened. I tried another bottle that I got as a Christmas stocking filler, and the same happened with that. In the same week, I tried two other micellar waters: La Roche Posay and Nivea, and they were both fine. No mouldy smell at all with those two.
I’ve since Googled it and so far only found a handful of comments from other blogs reciting the same problem and a thread on Reddit where the consensus was ‘it was a dodgy batch’ or ‘you’ve got a naturally mouldy face’.
I used two separate bottles, bought at different times, so it’s highly unlikely that they’re part of the same batch.
From the people who commented that they’d contacted Garnier, they all reported the same thing. Garnier told them it was their skin reacting to it, not the Micellar Water itself.
As far as I’m aware, I don’t suffer from fungal acne. Cystic, yes, but not fungal. I have read that it could be because of natural yeast sitting on my skin – which is normal. Apparently, different people have different types and levels of yeast living on their skin, and it could be that.
I don’t quite get it, because I used to use Garnier Micellar Water years ago without any problems. I don’t remember there being any overwhelming smell, or any smell at all, to be honest. I used to really like this product, so I’m quite disappointed that something’s changed, either with the formula, or with my skin. Either way, right now, the product is unusable for me.
Do you have this problem too? Or is it just me and my seemingly mouldy face?
