It’s seven years today since I published my first ever blog post.
I can’t quite believe that I’ve been waffling away for quite so long. As I seem to say every single year, it doesn’t seem like five minutes since I tentatively pressed ‘Publish’ on a review of a foundation. And yet, here we are, seven years down the line…
Like last year, this blog birthday post is going to be a bit of a weird mish-mash of content. Firstly, there’s a bit of self-indulgent waffling (for a change), and then I’ve got the most popular seven posts of the last year for you.
A bit of self-indulgent waffling
When I first started Katie Writes, it was initially called Headline Beauty – from my desire to train as a journalist and my blog topic of choice. After a few months of that name, and a rather garish mustard yellow colour scheme, I changed the name to Katie Writes.
I actually started this blog in December 2013, but chickened out of publishing any posts, because I wasn’t entirely happy with them. It took several months before the perfectionist in me was content with the content I started producing. Before that, I had an anonymous blog for three years, so I’ve been blogging regularly for ten whole years now. It’s crazy how time has flown.
Over the past seven years of this blog, I’ve published hundreds of posts – this one is number 499! – and written hundreds more that never saw the light of day. They’ve spanned quite an array of different topics from affordable beauty, to photography, mental health, finance, and even just life in general.
“…I do sometimes long for the ‘good old days’ of blogging, which seemed much simpler compared to today’s abundance of perfectionistic and polished long-form content.”
To a large extent, blogging has changed since 2014. When Instagram Stories came along in 2016, a lot of blog-style content moved over there.
Bloggers have, by and large, migrated over to Instagram; leaving their blogs for the most polished think-pieces only, in general.
And while I think it’s important to look and move forwards in life, I do sometimes long for the ‘good old days’ of blogging, which seemed much simpler compared to today’s abundance of perfectionistic and polished long-form content.
Anyway, I’ve been going on a bit too much, haven’t I?
As always, thank you so much for reading. It makes it – and has always made it – incredibly worthwhile. Seven years, eh? That’s the best part of a decade blathering on in this corner of the Internet!
